Contact: Darlene McCleish, Executive Director, Greene LEAF (Local Educational Advancement Foundation for Greene County Schools, 423-430-3429, PO Box 22, Afton, TN 37616

There are many unsung heroes throughout our Communities.  Who do you know who has made a great contribution to your community or another community?  Someone very special who has touched the lives of others or improved the community in some way?

The nonprofit foundation for Greene County Schools, Greene LEAF is looking to honor those who give back to the community.  After more than 4 years of working to improve the education of the students in Greene County Schools, Greene LEAF is turning the spotlight on some of the citizens who have given back to their communities or the world.  The public is asked to think of a past graduate of ten or more years ago of one of Greene County High Schools, or former high school, that has lit up a piece of the world in a memorable way.  Maybe it is someone you went to school with, worked with, a former teacher, a friend, or a neighbor is a person who is or has been dedicated to helping others or is giving back in some way to improve the lives of others.

Greene LEAF is looking for the “STARS of Greene County Schools” who graduated 10 or more years to honor with the first STARS award.  Former graduates from any of the four county high schools, North Greene, South Greene, West Greene, and Chuckey Doak are eligible to be honored with this very special award.  Anyone graduating with GED from one of the county schools ten or more years ago is also eligible.   The foundation will be selecting winners from each of the four areas of the county.

The Board of Greene LEAF assembled five years ago with plans of assisting Greene County Schools.  The need for more funding to boost programs in the county schools was seen by this group of citizens. Today the Greene LEAF Board members are, Carla Bewley, Robin Quillen, Robin Shepherd, Daniel Hawk, Randy Rumbley, Charles Hutchins, Joyce Bales, Wade McCamey, Brack Terry, Rick Tipton, Jerry Fortner, and David McLain.  After hiring, Darlene McCleish, a retired county teacher, is the Executive Director of the foundation, this groups has made an impact on not only adding needed technology but by inspiring teachers and staff.

With so many factions of the community stepping up to make donations the Greene LEAF foundation has been able to add needed technology to all seventeen county schools.  Each year more computers and their charging carts have been added to the schools for student use.  Throughout the year Greene LEAF is involved with the Literacy Fair for student and families, honoring teachers, rewarding attendance, attending school and community events, and speaking to community groups and businesses. It is through the generous donations of many individuals, organizations, and businesses that Greene LEAF has been able to bring funding to needed areas such as technology and literacy.

Greene LEAF IS looking forward to this commemorative award and event. Through the last few months, the Advisory Council of Greene LEAF has been meeting to set up the criteria for nominating and planning a spectacular evening for the community and honorees.  The awards dinner will take place on March 22, 2018 at 6pm at the First Baptist Church on Main Street in Greeneville.  Early reservations are recommended.  Table sponsors are welcomed and tickets will be available in January.  You may contact Greene LEAF for more information.

”Every year we have graduates who leave our county high schools to go on and do great things in the world.  These are the leaders and inspirational folks who find it in their hearts to help others.  We would like to locate some of these people who have graduated from North Greene, South Greene, West Greene, or Chuckey Doak and honor them,” stated Darlene McCleish, Executive Director of Greene LEAF.

Nominations must be post marked by January 5, 2018.  The foundation will send all nominees or the person designated on the nomination, an application form.  Nomination forms are available at all county schools and at STARS nomination forms.  Or contact McCleish at or Greene LEAF, PO Box 22, Afton, TN 37616.
